Education in Australia
Introduction to Australian Education
Australia used to be a British colony, and now it has always belonged to the Commonwealth of Nations. Therefore, Australia's education system is inherited from the United Kingdom and is recognized globally. Australia has a world-class level of education. With less than 0.5% of the world's population, Australia contributes 3% of the world's scientific research results. There are 43 universities in Australia, each of which has its own characteristics. The strongest universities are called the "Group of Eight", which is comparable to the Ivy League of the United States and ranks in the top 100 in the world. 60% Of Australian universities are among the top 500 in the world. Moreover, China and Australia have signed an agreement on mutual recognition of academic qualifications, which provides a two-way guarantee for Chinese students applying to immigrate to Australia or return to work after graduation. In addition, the quality of education in Australia’s primary and secondary schools ranks among the best in the world. Large cities such as Sydney and Melbourne have many elite schools.
The quality of education in Australia is of first-rate level, with 38 universities and more than 230 technical colleges in the country. These universities and technical colleges are almost all government public schools (except for the two private universities). Their education system is under the jurisdiction of the state government, so the administrative system is slightly different from state to state, but basically the quality of education is controlled and managed by the Australian federal government. Therefore, each school can maintain an average but at the same time high educational quality. The diplomas of each school are mutually recognized by the states and are accepted throughout the country. Australia’s academic qualifications are widely recognized by countries all over the world, including our country.
Education system
The Australian education system is divided into five major parts. They are:
1. University;
2. A vocational training system composed of the Institute of Technology and Continuing Education (TAFE);
3. English tuition schools (ELICOS) that provide English tuition courses for overseas students;
4. Private schools that offer business, hotel management, and aviation courses;
5. Primary and secondary schools.
Education at all levels
PRIMARY SCHOOL
Australia’s primary education system varies from state to state, usually six or seven years. In some states, students can also go to kindergarten or preschool before elementary school. Primary schools usually have the following courses: English, mathematics, social studies, art (including music, fine arts, handicraft, and drama) and health care (including sports and quality training).
JUNIOR/SENIOR SECONDARY EDUCATION
In New South Wales, Victoria, the Australian capital administrative region and Tasmania Asia, the length of junior high school is from 7th to 10th grade, just like our country’s junior one to senior one; while in Western Australia, South Australia, and Queensland and the length of junior high school in the Northern Territory is 8th to 10th grade. Compulsory education in Australia ends here. After the 10th grade, most of the students will enter the 11th and 12th grades of senior high schools (equivalent to the second and third grades in China). Most secondary schools are comprehensive co-educational schools. Some schools specialize in helping students enter the higher education system, and these schools also include certain TAFE colleges.
FOUNDATION PROGRAM
The pre-university course in Australia is a course designed for fully self-financed overseas students to prepare for their undergraduate study. Australia’s pre-university courses are designed to help applicants who have completed grade 12 high school education in their own country but cannot directly apply to enter an Australian university. It usually lasts for one year. However, some schools offer a half-year crash course for better grades. The best.
Institute of Technology and Continuing Education TAFE
Australia’s Technical and Continuing Education Institute is a nationally recognized and interoperable vocational training education system, which mainly provides professional skills training courses, most of which are more practical. Many TAFE courses are jointly organized with industry groups to ensure that the most practical training and the latest professional news are provided. TAFE is the largest department of tertiary education and the main force of Australian higher education. 70% of Australian secondary school graduates enter into it. Of Australia's 232 major TAFE colleges, 98 are located in major cities and state capitals, while the remaining 134 are evenly distributed in suburban towns and rural areas. All TAFE diploma qualifications are nationally interoperable and recognized. The courses provided by TAFE include accounting, secretarial, marketing, business management, agriculture and animal husbandry, land and marine resources, health care, computers, gardening, childcare, clothing design, beauty salons, mechanic training, tourism and hotel management. TAFE also provides a variety of English training courses for overseas students, such as English intensive courses, academic English courses, as well as 12th grade and university preparatory courses. Generally, the English standard set by TAFE is IELTS 5.5 or above or TOEFL 525 or above. Those who do not meet the admission criteria can also choose to study English in the language center set up by TAFE. After reaching the admission criteria, enter the formal course.
