Scenic point
Sumei Island
Sumei Island is located in the southwest of the Gulf of Thailand, about 35 kilometers northeast of Surat Thani Province. The island is roughly circular, with the widest part about 21km wide and the longest part about 25km long, with an average width of about 15km. It is surrounded by about 60 islands of different sizes. Sumei Island and these islands together form the Antong Marine National Park (Muko Ang Thong). The central part of the island is covered by almost uninhabited alpine forests (locally called Khao Pom), and the highest point is 635 meters above sea level. The rest of the lowlands are connected by a road about 51 kilometers long, mostly along the coastline.
The former capital of Samui Island is Nathong. On the northwest coast of the island, it is still the main port for fishing and ferry services. Nantong is the location of the regional government and the local business center. The old Chinese shops on the street are one of the characteristics. Each beach on the island will be regarded as a small town because there are always many hotels, restaurants and nightclubs near the beach.
The Antong National Park in Sumei is like the island of dreams in the film. Limestone caves and coral reef islands stand in a forest, full of colorful tropical fish. It retains more natural and simple flavor, because 20 years ago, Sumei Island was basically a secluded paradise. Because of the short history of development, the island still retains a primitive flavor.
