Greece's Athens airport hopes direct flights will bring more Chinese tourists

On the same day, Athens International Airport and Air China (Air China) Athens Sales Department held a celebration and press conference for the opening of the Shanghai-Athens route. Joanna Papadupoulo, director of the airport's communications and marketing department, introduced in her speech that in the two years since the opening of the Athens-Beijing direct flight in 2017, the number of Chinese passengers visiting the Athens International Airport has doubled. It is hoped that after the opening of the new direct flight route, the airport will welcome more Chinese tourists.
Xiao Junzheng, Chinese Ambassador to Greece, said in his speech that both China and Greece are major players in the world tourism industry. The two countries have comparative advantages and great potential for cooperation. He said that the deepened cooperation between China and Greece will not only further promote the development of tourism, but also promote cooperation in other fields such as investment, finance, trade and service industries, and benefit the two peoples.
Fan Heyun, general manager of Air China's Athens Sales Department, said that Air China has opened two direct flights from Athens to Beijing and Shanghai. Air China will continue to actively promote and create a new situation for cultural and tourism exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.
On December 22, 2022, Air China will launch a direct flight from Shanghai to Athens. The Beijing-Athens direct flight was launched in September 2017 and resumed in July 2022 after being suspended for several months during the epidemic.
