National Museum of Vanuatu
The Vanuatu National Museum is located near the Port Vila Pier and houses a large collection of traditional Vanuatu artifacts, from masks and gongs (Tam tam), local straw weaving, and canoe models. And there are prehistoric shells, fossils and pottery from each island, as well as specimens of animals and birds. The archaeological objects in the museum's collection are those used by the first people who settled some of the islands here more than 3,000 years ago. If you want to buy some special Vanuatu souvenirs, then the National Museum's Museum Shop is the place for you! All items are made with traditional techniques and materials by local people from the various islands here. It is a center for learning about Vanuatu, its history and culture. Sometimes you can catch up with the staff in the museum to demonstrate the production of sand paintings on the spot.
