Belem tower
The Belém Tower is a classic landmark building in the port of Portugal and a symbol of Lisbon. It has witnessed the voyage and parting, return and reunion of countless ships in Portugal in the Age of Discovery. In 1983, the Belém Tower was officially rated as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, and in 2007, it was named one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
Built between 1514 and 1520 by order of Manuel I to commemorate da Gama's arrival in India, the fortification was later used as a customs office, telegraph station, and even a lighthouse. The overall building of Belém Tower is arranged in an "L" shape with five floors. The entire tower body is made of white marble. It is a typical Manuel style building: the tower body is surrounded by stone ropes, dotted with stone knots, Stone carvings of crosses and some flora and fauna. Among them, the stone rhinoceros at the base is quite eye-catching, and it was built to highlight the achievements of Portuguese navigators in exploring overseas. The Belém Tower at sunset has a special charm. It is also a kind of pleasant enjoyment to take a walk in the harbor and blow the sea breeze.

Walking across the drawbridge, the main entrance you pass through is the tower of Belém. There are a total of 16 artillery positions on the wall to place cannons to defend against the enemy. In the center of the roof there is a Gothic rectangular skylight, which was used as a vent for the ramparts, so that the smoke from the cannon fire could quickly escape. Under the floor of the ramparts there are storage rooms, the large one accessible from the north staircase.

A steep staircase to the right of the main entrance of the Tower of Belém leads to a platform at the top of the rampart, which is polygonal and has a sentry box at each corner with a lookout window and a pepperbox-shaped roof. There is a circle of railings in the center of the platform, surrounding the patio below, and a statue of the Virgin of Victory is placed on the south side of the railings. On the barrier platform, you can enjoy a close view of the south facade of the Belém Tower. The balconies and railings are decorated with beautiful stone carvings. Among them, the stone carvings on the shield of King Manuel I are particularly eye-catching, with flowers and plants on the top of the shield. Decorated with stone carvings, it is lifelike.

Go up the stairs on the right side of the platform, and you can enter the interior of the Belém Tower. Along the spiral staircase, you can climb to the top platform of the tower, and you can have a glimpse of the beautiful scenery of Lisbon port: the Tagus River, the Geroni Mosh Monastery, the Nautical Monument, the statue of the Great Jesus on the opposite bank, the April 25th Bridge, etc. Looking at the bottom of the eye, the sailboats drifting past occasionally on the sea are also a beautiful scenery. The top platform of Belém Tower is very windy, please pay attention to windproof and keep warm.
