Rila Mountains
The Rila Mountains are the highest mountain range in the Balkans and the sixth highest mountain in Europe after the Caucasus, Alps, Sierra Nevada, Pyrenees and Etna.
The mountain name "Rila" is said to have originated in Thracian and means "mountain of many waters". The Rila Mountains are rich in glacial lakes and hot springs, and many rivers in the Balkan Peninsula, such as the Maritsa River, the Isker River and the Mesta River, all originate here.
The Rila Mountains have beautiful scenery, rich animal and plant resources, and small streams gurgling and flowing among towering ancient trees, which are extremely cheerful; and there is a monastery built in the 10th century in the mountains, which is the largest and most important monastery in Bulgaria and has been included in the World Cultural Heritage List .
